A quick peek into pelvic floor pt

I think I might need pelvic floor PT… what does this look like?

Pelvic floor Physical Therapy addresses any bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction. It can also be a large factor when dealing with low back and hip pain or any core issues.

A typical pelvic floor PT session at The METHOD includes a full body assessment with a large focus on the lumbar spine, hips, breathing and core. After you and your therapist chat, if it’s appropriate and if you feel comfortable with it, an internal exam may also be performed.

An internal assessment allows your therapist to directly assess your pelvic floor muscles for tone, restriction, and tenderness. Like any other group of muscles, we’re addressing the strength, coordination, endurance and power of these muscles.

No fear… speculums are not used — it normally consists of one gloved and lubricated finger inserted vaginally or rectally to access the pelvic floor muscles. Your therapist will palpate these muscles and then assess your coordination as well as the ability to contract and relax these muscles.

You always have control - if there is anything you’re not comfortable with, you and your therapist can come up with a game plan that makes sense for you.

Some common conditions pelvic floor PT can assist with include

  • urinary urgency

  • urinary leakage

  • frequent urination

  • prolapse

  • constipation

  • pain with sex

  • diastasis recti

  • and any issues during pregnancy.

After the initial assessment, your DPT will come up with a solid plan addressing impairments found and outline a plan a care that aligns with YOUR GOALS. Something that you can adhere to and something that we can hold you accountable to get back to doing what you love!

Your PTs at The METHOD are here to help. Ready to take the first step in addressing your pelvic floor? Give us a call and we can answer any questions you may have.
